These apple pie bites are going to become your new favorite treat! Think classic apple pie, shrunk down into bite sized form, then amplified with a sugar dusted coating and dunked in a homemade caramel sauce – yum!

The best thing about this recipe? It’s easy as… pie! Requiring only a handful of simple, pantry staple ingredients to create flavor filled bites of deliciousness!

Good things come in small packages

I think these apple pie bites are genius! You know the old saying “good things come in small packages” – these prove that!

I must admit, it’s not often I go through a drive thru, but the occasional road trip or long day, it’s inevitable. A&W has these delicious mini churro apple pies that I just love and I thought to myself, “I could easily make these at home!” Sure enough, I was right! I’m coming up with more and more reasons to skip eating out and stay home, because homemade is ALWAYS better!

Ingredients

  • Apples – I used medium sized granny smith apples! Feel free to use your preference.
  • Spice – I used apple pie spice, which is a blend of ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, ground ginger and ground cardamom.
  • Sugar – Brown sugar, packed.
  • Pie Crusts – I used my recipe for pie crusts, feel free to use store bought.
  • Butter – I used unsalted, melted.

Topping

  • Egg – I used a large egg, beaten.
  • Sugar – I used turbinado sugar for the topping – Turbinado sugar is partially refined sugar that retains some of the original molasses, giving it a subtle caramel flavor. If you don’t have it you can use brown sugar!
  • Spice – I used apple pie spice, which is a blend of ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, ground ginger and ground cardamom.

How to make apple pie bites

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350F.
  2. Prep: Core the apples and cut them each into 8 slices, about 1/2″ thick. Mix the apple pie spice and brown sugar together in a small bowl.
  3. Prepare the Pie Crusts: Roll the pie crusts out to 1/8″ thick. Using a 3″ biscuit cutter or cookie cutter, punch 16 rounds from the pie crusts. Line the rounds on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  4. Assemble: Place a slice of apple on each round, with the round side of the apple slice parallel to the round edge of the pie crust circle. Leave 1/4″ space around the edge of the pie crust.
  5. Fold: Sprinkle 1/2 tbsp of the brown sugar mixture over each apple slice, then drizzle with 1/2 tsp melted butter. Fold the pie crust over to create a half moon shape. Use a fork to press the edges together.
  6. Finish: Brush the beaten egg over each apple pie bite, then sprinkle generously with turbinado sugar. Finish with a light sprinkle of apple pie spice.
  7. Bake & Serve: Bake for 18-20 minutes, until golden brown and crisp. Serve with caramel sauce.

How to serve

These little beauties can be gobbled up as is, but I highly recommend serving them dipped in some caramel sauce! It just adds a little oomph to each bite and the flavor mixes perfectly with the brown sugar and apples.

I think these apple pie bites would be perfect to serve at a party, any backyard get together or bbq, even as a fun twist on dessert after dinner!

Can I make these in advance?

You can definitely make these pie bites ahead of time! Prepare as noted in the instructions above (up until topping them with the egg and sugar and popping them in the oven). Skip those steps, cover the baking tray and freeze until ready for baking! Thaw out when ready to bake, finish with steps 6 and 7, voila!

How to store leftovers

You can store your leftovers for 3 – 4 days in the fridge, sealed in an airtight container.

Reheating

If you want to make these the day before, you can reheat them in the oven at 350F for 5 minutes and serve!

Don’t get me wrong, these are good cold too – it’s not necessary to reheat.
