The Best Breakfast Sandwich

I love starting my day with these breakfast sandwiches. The combination of crispy toasted rolls, savory ham, and melty cheddar cheese is absolutely irresistible. Each bite is a delightful mix of textures and flavors that just makes you feel good.

What’s great about these sandwiches is how quick and easy they are to make. In just 25 minutes, you can whip up a warm, hearty meal that satisfies and energizes. Whether you’re making them for a family breakfast or a solo treat, these sandwiches never disappoint.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients needed to make breakfast sandwich.
  • Dinner rolls: Use your favorite dinner rolls. You can substitute with English muffins or bagels if you prefer.
  • Ham slices: You can use turkey, bacon, or sausage as alternatives.
  • Large eggs: You can use egg whites or a plant-based egg substitute if needed.
  • Cheddar cheese slices: Melts beautifully and adds a creamy texture. Feel free to swap with Swiss, provolone, or your favorite cheese.
  • Butter: Used for frying the eggs to add flavor and prevent sticking. You can use olive oil or a non-stick spray instead.
  • Salt and pepper: Adjust to taste.

How To Make Breakfast Sandwiches

Preheat The Oven And Toast The Buns

process shots showing how to make breakfast sandwiches.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange the split dinner rolls on a baking sheet, cut-side up, and toast in the oven for 5-7 minutes until they are lightly golden and crisp.

Cook The Ham

process shots showing how to make breakfast sandwiches.

While the rolls are toasting, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ham slices and cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side until slightly browned and warmed through. Set the ham aside.

Fry The Eggs

In the same skillet, melt a bit of butter. Crack the eggs into the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and fry according to your preference. If you like your eggs fully set, flip them over after the edges set and cook for another minute.

Assemble The Sandwiches

Take the toasted rolls and place a slice of cheddar cheese on each bottom half. Immediately add a warm fried egg on top of each cheese slice, allowing the heat to melt the cheese slightly. Top each egg with two slices of the cooked ham and cover with the top halves of the rolls. If you prefer the cheese more melted, quickly microwave each assembled sandwich for about 10-15 seconds or place them back in the oven under a broiler for a minute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these breakfast sandwiches ahead of time?

Yes, you can! Prepare the sandwiches as instructed, then wrap them individually in foil and refrigerate. To reheat, either microwave for 30-60 seconds or warm them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes.

How do I make the eggs if I prefer scrambled eggs?

If you prefer scrambled eggs, simply scramble the eggs in a bowl, season with salt and pepper, and cook them in the skillet with butter until they are set. Then assemble the sandwiches as usual.

What’s the best way to reheat these sandwiches without making the bread soggy?

To avoid soggy bread, reheat the sandwiches in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes or until warmed through. This will keep the bread crispy.

Expert Tips

  1. Toast the rolls: Ensure the rolls are toasted to a light golden color to provide a perfect crispy base for the sandwiches.
  2. Use a non-stick skillet: Fry the eggs in a non-stick skillet to prevent sticking and ensure easy flipping.
  3. Layer ingredients while warm: Assemble the sandwiches while the ingredients are still warm to help melt the cheese perfectly.
  4. Customize your eggs: Fry the eggs to your preferred doneness, whether it’s runny, over-easy, or fully set.
  5. Don’t overcrowd the skillet: Fry the eggs in batches if necessary to ensure even cooking and better control over the doneness.

Storage

To store these breakfast sandwiches, wrap each one individually in plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the wrapped sandwiches in a freezer-safe bag for up to 1 month. To reheat, microwave for 1-2 minutes or warm in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes.

Equipment

  • 13-inch by 9-inch Baking Sheet

Ingredients

  • 6 dinner rolls split
  • 12 slices ham
  • 6 large eggs
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • butter for frying
  • salt and pepper to taste
US Customary – Metric

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange the split dinner rolls on a baking sheet, cut-side up, and toast in the oven for 5-7 minutes or until lightly golden and crisp.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ham slices. Cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side until they are slightly browned and warmed through. Set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add a bit of butter. Depending on the size of your skillet, you may need to fry the eggs in batches. Crack the eggs into the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and fry according to your preference. For a fully set egg, flip over after the edges set and cook for another minute.
  • Place a slice of cheddar cheese on each bottom half of the toasted dinner rolls. While the cheese is still cold, add a warm fried egg on top of each cheese slice, allowing the residual heat to start melting the cheese. Top each egg with two slices of the cooked ham. Cover with the top halves of the dinner rolls.
  • Serve the sandwiches warm. If you prefer the cheese more melted, you can quickly microwave the assembled sandwiches for about 10-15 seconds each or place them back in the oven under a broiler for a minute just before serving.

Tips & Notes:

  1. Toast the rolls to keep them from getting soggy when adding the eggs and ham.
  2. Customize the sandwich by adding your favorite veggies, like sautéed spinach or sliced tomatoes.
  3. If you prefer, scramble the eggs instead of frying them.
