three mason jars filled with mojito with blue straws

This recipe has been a staple for us this summer. It’s incredibly easy to make, not too sweet, and bursting with fresh flavors. I used strawberries to add some summery flare and color to these drinks, but you can get creative and use any of your favorite fruits. If you’re a purist, this recipe it just as delicious using only fresh mint and lime.

For us, a big pitcher of mojito is always the answer. Having guests over? Mojito. Enjoying some sunshine out in the backyard? Mojito. I could go on and on… you get the picture here.

process of muddling lime, mint, strawberries, and rum for a pitcher of mojito

Tips For Making The Perfect Mojito

  1. Using simple syrup instead of granulated sugar is much easier to mix into your mojito. If you have to stir too much to dissolve granulated sugar, you can lose the carbonation from the soda water. You can use pre-made fruit syrups instead to add extra flavor with the sweetness.
  2. Make sure to buy mint that is very fresh and has little to no brown spots. Wilted or old mint can add an unwanted bitterness.
  3. Have fun and get creative with your flavors! Add muddled raspberries, mango, peaches, or make it extra citrusy with some oranges and grapefruit.
  4. If you don’t have a muddler, you can use the end of a wooden spoon, or a cocktail shaker with a bit of ice. This process releases all the oils and juice from the mint and limes.

Ingredients

  • 3 limes cut into wedges
  • 25-30 mint leaves
  • ½ cup chopped strawberries
  • ½ cup simple syrup *
  • 6 ounce rum
  • 5 cups ice
  • 5 cups soda water
US Customary – Metric

Instructions

  • Add 2 of the sliced limes, mint leaves, and strawberries to a large sturdy glass or cocktail mixer. Muddle well until all the juices and oils have released. Add the simple syrup and rum, and muddle until everything is combined.
  • Pour the mixture over a pitcher of ice, and add the remaining lime wedges. Slowly mix in the soda water and use a long spoon to mix everything together.

Tips & Notes:

  1. * To make your own simple syrup, combine 1/2 cup sugar with 1/2 of water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, and remove from the heat. Allow the syrup to cool completely before transferring to another container.
  2. You can make this recipe as a classic mojito by excluding the strawberries.
  3. Feel free to use any type of fruits that you like best. You can try raspberries, mango, pears, etc. You can also try cucumber for a refreshing twist.
  4. You can adjust the amount of rum in this recipe to suit how strong you like your drinks or eliminate it entirely to make a virgin mojito.
  5. If you don’t like rum, try vodka or gin instead.
