Teriyaki Chicken

Teriyaki chicken is one of my favorite and most ordered dish whenever I eat out at a Japanese restaurant. There’s just something about that slightly sweet, decidedly tangy, and richly savory sauce that I just can’t seem to get enough of! But what is it exactly that makes this dish so special?

It just seems that this dish is a marriage made in heaven. That tender, juicy chicken all cooked and marinated in a savory, sticky, sweet teriyaki sauce. My mouth is watering just thinking about it but luckily it’s ready in a flash so let’s get into it!

What Is Teriyaki?

Did you know that teriyaki is actually a cooking method? It’s used in Japanese cooking and just involves cooking your food in a glaze typically made from soy sauce, some type of sugar, and mirin – also known as rice wine vinegar. I shared a great Teriyaki Sauce recipe on the blog the other day and have been wanting to give you guys lots of ideas for recipes to make with it!

It’s a bit more Western to pair this sauce with chicken, but you’ll be glad you did. I promise.

Ingredients In Chicken Teriyaki

Detailed measurements and instructions can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.

  • Olive oil – I used olive oil. Feel free to use vegetable oil if you’d like.
  • Chicken – I used chicken breasts, boneless and skinless, cut into 1 inch pieces. You can also use chicken thighs.
  • Pepper – To taste, we’re not using any salt today as our sauce has more than enough sodium.
  • Teriyaki sauce – I used my own homemade teriyaki sauce which really makes all the difference in the world.
  • Onions – I used green onions because it packs extra freshness.
  • Sesame seeds – I like to use toasted sesame seeds but if raw is all you have it’s still a great toasty and nutty addition.

How To Make Chicken Teriyaki

Detailed measurements and instructions can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.

  • Prepare the chicken: Cut the chicken breast into 1 inch pieces. Add the olive oil to a large skillet and heat if over medium heat. Add the chicken to the skillet and season with pepper.
  • Cook the chicken: Fry the chicken until golden and almost cooked through, about 10 minutes. Pour the teriyaki sauce over chicken and simmer until the chicken is cooked through for more 5 minutes.
  • Finish the dish: Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.
  • Enjoy: Serve over rice with steamed broccoli.

What To Serve With Chicken Teriyaki

This dish is definitely tweakable in regards to rice you can use and what veggies you can serve alongside, here’s some suggestions:

Veggies
  • Steamed broccoli
  • Bok choy
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Bell pepper
  • Asparagus
  • Zucchini
Rice
  • Jasmine rice
  • Basmati rice
  • Brown rice

What Can I Serve Alongside Chicken Teriyaki?

A dish like this is flexible, so it can be paired with nearly anything you’d like. I personally like to just curl up with a big bowl of this protein over fluffy rice but if you’d like to go the extra mile and make a complete meal here are some great accompaniments:

  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Mushroom Arugula Warm Salad
  • Garlic Parmesan Roasted Brussels Sprouts
  • Creamy Cucumber Salad
  • Greek Salad

Storing Leftover Chicken Teriyaki

Fridge

This chicken teriyaki recipe can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 – 4 days. The sauce can be stored separately in the fridge and should last for 1 week.

Freezer

If you’d like to freeze your cooked chicken just freeze in an airtight container. Just allow to thaw overnight in the fridge when ready to eat. The sauce can be frozen indefinitely – perfect for other dishes in the future!
